What is athlete workload management?

9 days ago by Tim Gray

Managing an athletes workload is important as it tracks and allows for adjustments to an athletes training and competition load and looks to maximise performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Athletes can record their activities in AthHQ, using basic information about activities allows for the calculation of an Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR). Activities simply need the Duration and Rating of Perceived Exertion to calculate an arbitrary number that is used to calculate the Acute load - this is a measure of the fatigue for the last 7 days.

The Chronic load is a measure of the longer term fitness of the previous 28 days.

ACWR Number is derived by dividing the Acute load by the Chronic load, where the ACWR falls within a range to provide guidance on the relative risk of injury.

< 0.80 - Under Training Zone - Higher relative risk of injury 0.80 to 1.30 - Optional Zone - Lowest relative risk of injury 1.3 to 1.50 - Elevated Risk Zone - Moderate to high relative risk of injury

1.50 - Danger Spike Zone - Highest relative risk of injury

The ACWR is a helpful performance tool, but cannot perfectly predict injuries on its own.

AthHQ supports the calculation of an athletes ACWR using the most basic of information that doesn’t require any equipment, such as wearables that measure HR. It can calculate the ACWR using just the duration and the Rating of Perceived Exertion.
